چکیده

Aerogels can be used in spaceflight applications as thermal insulators due to their low density, conductivity, and tortuous path for solid conduction. However, the aerogel formulation must optimized increase stability of aerogels, a drastic densification decrease surface area often is exhibited after high-temperature exposure. This work considers yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) which have conductivity are expected temperatures between 600 °C 1000 °C. It anticipated that new sol-gel chemistries will yield YSZ aerogels exhibit retained mesoporous structure, increased area, minimized shrinkage upon exposure higher use range. investigates addition surfactant 20 mol% aerogels. The cationic surfactant, cetrimonium bromide (CTAB), was templating agent, preventing collapse structure gelation drying. determined adding one-half times critical micelle concentration CTAB by 72% 41% pore volume following °C, respectively. level had greatest compared without or with twice CTAB. By optimizing CTAB, enhanced make these materials more efficient when management systems.

Effect of high-temperature aging on the thermal conductivity of nanocrystalline tetragonal yttria-stabilized zirconia

The thermal conductivity of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier coatings increases with high-temperature aging. This common observation has been attributed to the densification of the coatings as porosity sinters out and pores and cracks spheroidize to minimize their surface energy. We show that the thermal conductivity of fully-dense 3 mol.% Y2O3 stabilized zirconia (3YSZ) also in...

Low-Temperature Superionic Conductivity in Strained Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia

We report very high lateral ionic conductivities in epitaxial cubic yttria-stabilized zirconia synthesized on single crystal SrTiO3 and MgO substrates by reactive direct current magnetron sputtering. Superionic conductivities (i.e., ionic conductivities of the order ~1 Ω -1 cm -1 ) are observed at 500 oC for 58-nm-thick films on MgO. Our results indicate a superposition of two parallel contribu...

WEAR REESISTANCE OF NANOSTRUCTURED AND CONVENTIONAL YTTRIA-STABILIZED ZIRCONIA COATINGS

Partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) has been proven to be an excellent candidate as a thermal barrier coating (TBe) for hot sections in, for instance, heat or internal combustion engines and gas turbine parts. The main functions of these coatings are reducing heat losses, reducing fuel consumption, increasing efficiency, and extending durability and life. One of the main problems involved is we...

Molecular dynamics simulations of yttria-stabilized zirconia

Oxygen diffusion in the oxygen ionic conductor yttria-stabilized zirconia is investigated by means of the molecular dynamics simulation technique. Oxygen ions migrate by means of a discrete hopping process, mainly between neighbouring tetrahedral sites. Diffusion appears to occur in a short time and a long time regime. Only when the oxygen ions have moved over distances much larger than the cha...
